Lawyers in the Nonprofit Legal Defense Network provide pro bono support to help nonprofits bolster resilience and advance their missions. Lawyers experienced with tax-exempt organizations advocacy, compliance, and nonprofit tax law are essential, but every lawyer can play an important role.

We The Action powers the Nonprofit Legal Defense Network, so all lawyers need a We The Action account to participate. Creating one is quick, simple, and free.

 

 

Training

Learn how to guide nonprofits through Alliance for Justice’s Advocacy Check-Up assessment tool and provide legal support. Free training is offered for both newer and experienced volunteers.

Offer Risk Assessments

Help nonprofits self-identify their legal needs by clarifying rules and offering general guidance. You can participate in two ways:

Virtual Risk Assessment Clinics

  • Lawyers will be welcomed by Alliance for Justice lawyers before meeting with nonprofits one-on-one in breakout rooms to work through the Advocacy Checkup tool together. 
  • Alliance for Justice compliance experts will be available to answer lawyers’ questions during the assessments.
  • Lawyers participating in this clinic will not provide any legal or other individualized advice to nonprofits.
  • They will walk through a checklist of common compliance issues for nonprofits, and lawyers can provide clarification of the rules and regulations, as well as generally applicable guidance, which may allow the nonprofit representative to identify issues to address through legal counsel.

  • Nonprofits can also submit risk assessment requests directly via We The Action; you can volunteer to assist on your own schedule.

  • Advise on the impacts of executive orders, litigation, or other legal developments,

Volunteer for Specific Legal Help Requests

Assist nonprofits with a wide range of discrete legal needs. These may include requests to:

  • Assess risks 
  • Review policies or bylaws 
  • Creating new policies or procedures, 
  • Advising on the impacts of executive orders, litigation, or other legal developments, 
  • Prepare action plans for subpoenas or government inquiries 

You can review open requests and volunteer directly through We The Action. You and the nonprofit will decide together whether you will work on the request.
